The GP-led primary care network teams have been asked to vaccinate those with a learning disability because they hold the information about each individual’s medical condition.
If you or someone you care for has is on the GP Learning Disability Register you will be invited for a vaccination shortly.
The Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation has provided guidance on vaccinating people with a learning disability plus those with other associated conditions, including Down’s syndrome.
To support the primary care teams in rolling out the COVID vaccine to people with a learning disability, there is a COVID vaccine pathway.
The pathway provides the GP with all the necessary tools to help them vaccinate someone with a learning disability at the right time as well as how to make reasonable adjustments for someone who has capacity, or when the person does not have capacity.
If you’re someone with a learning disability, a parent or carer, when attending the appointment you can ask the GP for more information about the pathway. You, your parent or carer can also talk to your GP about any concerns or changes you require to make the vaccination appointment more comfortable and ensure any of your specific needs are met.
If you are not sure if you or your relative is on the GP register, contact your GP. You can also find out more about becoming registered as having a learning disability.
